Activities and Places to Visit on Rusinga Island

Rusinga Islands is located in Homabay county in Kenya, a home of beautiful places. Here are some of the places you can visit when on the Island:

1. Tom Mboya Mausoleum

This mausoleum is located in the heart of Rusinga Island and offers a great range of exhibits that showcase the history and culture of the Luo community. The mausoleum houses a tomb for Tom Mboya and a small museum. The mausoleum is located about 15 kilometers from the famous Rusinga Bridge. The entry donation is 200 Kenyan shillings, and a caretaker usually shows people around.

2. Resting on the beaches

Rusinga island has beautiful beaches with sand and pebbles. The island has beautiful sunrises and sunsets, beautiful scenes which should be captured on camera. 

3. Swimming, boat riding and kayaking

The lake is deep hence the need to restrain from swimming far away from the beaches. Boat riding and Kayaking are some of the activities that are offered by private business people and hotels on the island. 

4. Fishing 

Lake Victoria is famous for its tasty nile perch and tilapia fish and silver cyprinid fish commonly referred to as omena. Fishing on the island is therefore not a bad idea. However, fishing for omena would require determination as it is only done during the night, with kerosene lamps to attract the omena into the nets. 

5. Bird watching

Sunsets are the best time to not only enjoy the sunset hues but also watch the birds as they go about their business. 

Hotels 

The island has numerous hotels and guest houses making it a good place to visit without necessarily sorting accommodation beforehand. The housing options are: guest houses, camping, Airbnbs and hotels. 

The guest houses go for as low as six hundred kenyan shillings per night per room. Most of the guest houses are self contained and have a hot water shower, luxuries that are appreciated by both solo travelers and groups. Camping is another good option for people traveling on a budget with most camping sites charging from one thousand shillings per night. The hotels charge from two thousand kenyan shillings per night.

  2. Rusinga Island Lodge
  3. Blue Ridge Hotel
  4. Chula Beach Resort
  5. White Stones Resort
  6. Riofa Beach Resort
  7. Lorateng’ Lodge

Besides standard and luxury rooms, the Riofa Beach Resort offers camping.

The guest houses include:

  1. Midossa Guest House
  2. Rusinga Guest House

    • Hello, it is a struggle for me. But writing in the morning helps. Plus, I do daily gratitude at the end of the day. I mention blogging as the one thing I am looking forward to doing in the morning (tomorrow). The pressure to follow my plan helps.
